[The History of Ayuttaya]
Known as "The Ayutthaya Historical Park (อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์พระนครศรีอยุธยา), most tourists chose to come Thailand because of UNESCO's World Heritage is in the land of smile. The Historical Park covers the ruins of the old city of Ayutthaya, which was founded by the King Ramathibodi I in 1350. Ayuttaya was the capital of the country until its destruction by the Burmese army in 1767.
The Historical Park was declared by UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. One astonishing fact is that the place was ruled by 35 kings during its existence. In addition to this the place was ruled by the most famous King in Thai history, known as the saviour of Thai people Phra Narai (lit. Narai the God), King Narai ruled 1656 C.E to 1688 CE.
Ayutthaya was friendly towards foreign traders. For example, Chinese, Vietnamese or Annamese in the past, Indians, Japanese as well as Persians. Later, also there were Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and French. The kingdom permitted those foreign traders to set up their own villages, but mostly those villages were built outside the walls of the capital. In the 16th century, Ayutthaya was described by foreign traders as one of the biggest and wealthiest cities in the Eastern countries.
By 1550, the kingdom's vassals included some city-states in the Malay Peninsula, Sukhothai, and parts of Cambodia. In foreign accounts, Ayutthaya was called Siam; however, some say the people of Ayutthaya called themselves Tai, and their kingdom as Krung Tai, or literally it means The Tai capital.
Today, the Kingdom was destroyed, however, tourists can enjoy the old Buddhists' temples, as well as elephant trekking. The Kingdom has turned into the one of the most popular sight-seeing spots, yet, we can feel the atmosphere of the ancient Thailand.
