Hindu Deity: Phra Phrom (พระพรหม) and the Buddhism Art: Altar [Art]

In Thailand, almost every household has the place for Phra Phrom. (พระพรหม: which is believed to be Hindu Brahma in the look of Southeast Asian). They believed Phra Phrom is protecting their lands. For example, in the house, Phra Phrom is protecting the place, the owner's land property from evils. (See picture below)

Hindu deities are also worshipped by Thai Buddhists; tourists can see Ganeysya, Lakshmi, Shiva, Indra in the cities. These deities are considered one of the Thai Buddhism today, which originated in India's Hindu.



Phra Phrom is always sitting on the mini-temple as you can see.

Phra Phrom is Hindu Brahma, the God who is regarded in Thai culture as a deity of good fortune and protection. Thai people usually offer incense sticks, candles as well as jasmine flowers and some coconut milk. Usually placing these items, offerings before each head of Phra Phrom,

Each head represents a different aspect of the deity. it is believed each side of Phra Phrom offers different blessings. Some people place wooden elephant statues on the altar to honor him. The worshipers of Phra Phrom are also commonly advised to stay away from consuming meat. The significance of the four faces of Phra Phrom is to offer people whenever in need of. Then, grant them their wishes. The significants of the items are interpreted as:

Book in hand : Representing knowledge
Beads : Representing reincarnation
Spear Stick : Representing accomplishment
Flower Stick : Representing blessing water
Conch Shell : Representing prosperity
Hand placed on the chest : Representing offering compassion
Flying Wheel : representing suppress evil and to release all gloominess and worries, Cakka.
Cinta Mani : representing the Almighty Power

[HOW TO PRAY]

Omkarabindunatam uppannam brohmasahapatinama atikappe su, a, kate pancapatunam tisva namobuddhaya vandanam. Siddhi kiccam siddhi kammam siddhi kariya tadakato siddhi teco jayoniccam siddhi labho nirantaram sabbakammam prasiddhime sabbasiddhi bhavantu. (Pray 3times and make a wish)

The altar, where Phra Phrom is sitting, is made by Buddhism artist. They are not Buddhist monks but the people who consider themselves as the servants of the God and deities. They do, of course, earn money for its work, but it is not so much money compare to the workers in companies. As you can see from the man's face, it requires some skills of painting.

This altar goes to some company. Thus, not only for individual worship, but also company will place it within their property. Workers will pray for their success in the business.
