Insight into Thai Buddhism [travel]
[History of Thai Theravada Buddhism]
Buddhism in Thailand is mostly of the Theravada influence. Nearly 95% of Thailand's population is Buddhist of the Theravada school, even though Buddhism in Thailand has become integrated with folk beliefs, and as well as some Chinese religions from the large Thai-Chinese population.
Buddhist temples in Thailand are characterised by tall golden stupas; the Buddhist architecture in Thailand is similar to that in other Southeast Asian countries. Particularly Cambodia and Laos, with which Thailand shares cultural and historical heritage.
The history of Buddhism in Thailand, around the 13th to the 19th century, are still remain mystery, in part because few historical records or religious texts survived after the Burmese destruction of Ayutthaya (the capital city of the kingdom) in 1767.
