[Life in the Thai Temple]

For the people who really have no ideas what does a Thai monk do in everyday life. You came to the right spot. Some of you may already know that Buddhism as a general is to pursue simplicity. As the world became flatter than ever in human history; the capitalism spread through nations, pursuing simplicity is much harder than ever. Nowadays, Thai Buddhism is widely practiced by people who want to live in a simple life. Long make it short, becoming monk is not so difficult when actually in Thailand provides monkhood program for a short period.

When you visit Thailand, you will be interested in a night life, as the most tourists would do. However, becoming monk for a one week or two, is also ideal way for cultural experience. Even though you are Christians or Muslims, I doubt Muslim people would do, but Buddhism may be called, "religion" but it is not something required for you to convert into Buddhist to be a monk. You can always go back to your originality.

You may call this optimistic, but "Thai" Buddhism is something more like improving inner self. If you are familiar with Japanese Bushido, way of Samurai warrior, Thai Buddhism is more like a philosophy to be a good person by doing good to others. It is not just doing "good" intentionally to have a self purification or clean up your sins by doing good deed; Thai Buddhism is a guidance to be a good person naturally. "Good person" is very broad sense, I would say good means to care for others voluntarily without expecting something back. Again, sound optimistic, but Thai Buddhism may provide you with happy, or the reason to live.

So, coming back to the main topic what does a Thai monk do. Thai monks are pretty busy as it seems in the below, but it is actually a traditional life, or the life human beings used to be in the past.

This is the common schedule in the most temples:

4.00 am - The monks wake up and meditate for one hour or so, then another one hour of chanting Buddhist teachings.

6.00 am - The monks walk barefoot around the neighbourhood; while, the local people stopped the monks and offering them with food, drinks and some donation, approx. $1. Monks chant Buddhist teachings for those locals who stopped them.

8.00 am - Returning to the temple, monks sit together to eat breakfast, then make a blessing, literally chanting for the world peace. It might be controversial in some another branch of Buddhists' countries but Thai monks can eat animal meats. But those meats are something that offered by the locals.

1.00 pm - Classes in Buddhist teachings begin. Some monks may attend schools outside the temple.

6.00 pm - A two-hour session of meditation and prayer begins.

8.00 pm - The monks do homeworks, especially novices should memorise some teachings and chanting.

Besides these duties, usually monks are given specific roles to play in the day-to-day running and maintenance of the temple and clean up its surroundings. Taking care of street dogs and cats as well as give a lesson to people who visit temples.

I hope you all get some ideas of simple life. Thank you for your continuing support and Share on Facebook, and ReTweet on Twitter.
