Peace in Bangkok During Statutory Holidays [Thai Buddhism News]

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” - Gautama Buddha

Both Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, and Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra sent their wishes to urge peace while Songkran break. As the Buddhist's point of view, peace within country is the best of all, as the Lord Buddha noted, "Peace comes from within...."

Perhaps, some of you might have a question what is happening in Thailand now. People used to smile when tourists visit; however, today Thai people will not smile at you from the bottom of the heart when two political groups crushed in Bangkok, and in many parts of the regions.

One group is called "Yellow Shirt", likewise Thai Royal Family's trademark, literally people wearing yellow shirts and claimed that the current Prime Minister and her family members have exploited their country. The very recent case was about the new policy, "rice purchase." P.M. Yingluck has decided to buy rice from Thai farmers in more than a standard set of price, in which she thinks it would help farmers to get out of poverty, however, many thinks it was for political reasons to gain support and vote.

So, the rice she bought from tax money has gone nowhere. That rice is also meant to sell internationally, however, unfortunately, the rice could not be sold well when there are much cheaper rice sold by neighbouring countries like Laos, Burma, Cambodia and Vietnam. The rice is still kept in stock securely.

On the hand, the other political group, which is called, "the Red Shirt." These people are for-government. Majority of them are coming from the P.M. Yingluck's home region, Chiang Mai province as well as Thai farmers, taxi drivers (including motorbike taxi). As you can see, sociologically speaking, people in this political group are comprised of working class. Unlike the Yellow group, these people are little bit aggressive. In the very recent case, Thai monk has been robbed by group of the Red Shirt, when the monk intervenes with their political view.

Thailand used to be a peaceful country. Most tourists loved its Southeast Asian atmospheric cultures. As the capitalism hits in Thailand, more and more people seems to be forgetting about their religious simple life. Their materialistic views blind their peaceful thought.

"Namo tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammasambhuddhassa...."

Let us pray for the peace. At least during holidays, let us pray for their happiness.

Perhaps, religions may be the old traditions, but people should not forget that peace always comes within, we should not seek without.
